William Hugh Tye Lost His Entire First Family
Records at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California indicate that William Hugh Tye (1867-1927) was originally married to Josephine who was born on April 27, 1873 and died at the age of 18 on July 22, 1891. Josephine is buried in the old section of the cemetery with their three children, two of whom died the same year she did:
Infant of William and Josie, stillborn, March 31, 1889
Walter L., April 9, 1890-May 9, 1891
Albert, April 25, 1891-June 28, 1891
Although there is no definitive documentation of the relationship of infants, Walter L. and Albert with parents, William and Josie, the location of their graves indicates that they were a family. While there is no information on the internet about an epidemic in Oakland in 1891, the fact that three family members died the same year at one month intervals points to that possibility.
After losing his entire first family, William Hugh Tye went on to marry Mary Ellen Bowen and together they had seven children, truly a testament to the resilience of our ancestors! He and Mary Ellen then lost their only daughter at age 11.
